About Plantation Shutters
A plantation shutter is a solid and stable window covering. They can fill an entire window with a tilt rod in the middle of the shutter which is used to open and close the louvers. Recently, designs have progressed and if you are looking for a more contemporary, less traditional look, you can have a hidden mechanism instead of the classic tilt rod. This recent installation of ours to the right is one with a hidden control mechanism.
Plantation shutters are hinged so that they can be fully opened to allow additional ventilation or light. There are options available so that the shutters can come in sets of hinged panels which are then folded back across the window, which allows you to fold part of the shutter back, rather than all.
The modern design might vary slightly from the original shutters due to material and manufacturing improvements but the concept remains to provide a versatile and elegant window dressing in both contemporary and traditional properties.
Installing Plantation Shutters
The Window Shutter Company provide a bespoke shutter advice and installation service. We will arrange to meet at your home at a time that best suits you in order to properly measure your windows and see what styles of shutters will be ideal for your needs. We offer professional advice on different shutter styles and can reach an agreement that benefits both the aesthetic and the longevity of your property.
Hardwoods are the classic material for plantation shutters but shutters made from plastic and various composites provide excellent alternatives that are hard wearing and cost effective. Shutters suit most, if not all windows, and can, in some cases, be the only answer to shaped units. We custom make our shutters to fit any shape or sized window and our plantation shutters may also be used in conjunction with our conservatory shutter range to maximum effect.
A Brief History of Plantation Shutters
The basic design of the plantation shutter has been used for many years. Originally, they were installed in structures which had window spaces but no glass. When the weather was bad, the louvers were closed and then opened in warm weather for fresh air and ventilation.
The European colonists in the Caribbean and American South soon realised that the design was ideally suited to their climates and many old plantation homes still have these distinctive interior shutters, hence why they have retained the name “plantation shutters”.
When considering plantation shutters for your home, you may also come across the term “colonial shutters”. Colonial shutters were developed in the north east of the United States and are commonly seen in early American style homes and are more delicate looking. They are difficult to source as manufacturers now concentrate on the more popular plantation style.
