Warm & Cosy with Reducing Heat Loss Shutters

Shutters are an excellent way to improve energy efficiency in your home and to help prevent heat loss.

In winter months, we all know to put an extra layer or two on before venturing outside to keep us warm. Shutters have a similar affect on buildings – they provide an extra thermal layer to a window, typically the thermal weak point of a building.

New independent research by the University of Salford’s Energy House Labs has demonstrated that shutters can reduce heat loss through windows by up to 28%*, and this figure could be even higher for single glazed windows or old double glazed windows.

Against a backdrop of rising energy prices and climate change, the study focuses on how shading helps keep indoor spaces warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Using research and evidence, it also highlights how shading products can have a positive impact on people’s wellbeing, as well as deliver practical benefits around privacy and security.

Commissioned and funded by the British Blind and Shutter Assocation (BBSA), of which we are members, the data shows that window shutters can have a significant positive impact on energy savings. The lab is home to a full-scale early 20th century terraced house in an environmental chamber which replicates rain, wind and temperatures from -12C to 30C in controlled conditions.

How to use your shutters to save energy in the winter:

  • Let heat in during the day: open your shutters when sunny in the day to utilise the free solar energy from the sun to warm your home
  • Keep heat in at night: close your shutters at night to provide extra insulation helping to reduce heat loss, keep warmer and save energy.

You could improve the insulation properties further by opting for our shutters with an integrated blind which could see savings increase up to 32%.

Shutters are proven to be more effective than a standard roller blind which will only provide up to 13% reduction in heat loss.
