Project Details

We were invited to quote for plantation shutters for an 18th Century property with outstanding features and large sandstone framed windows – a truly stunning building. The client was looking to add shutters to assist with insulation of the single glazed, leaded windows. The brief was also to remain in keeping with the property as much as possible.

The need for privacy was not a priority in this case, so solid panelled shutters were an obvious answer and the client had investigated this possibility from the outset. With louvred shutters, you can have the panels closed and the louvres open, enabling you to control light and privacy depending on how you tilt the louvres. With solid shutters, your window is either completely covered or totally exposed.

Designed as a bi-fold shutter with a mid-rail, we were able to create a panelled look that was very distinctive. The client opted for a finish in a custom Farrow and Ball colour, painted to match the existing décor. Adding anti-brass hardware added to the period look and fitted in beautifully with the existing window and room.

These shutters were in our hardwood range (the minimum requirement for solid shutters). We fitted using brass screws to match the hardware and opted to leave a shadow line around rather than fill against the sandstone. This was possible due to the exceptional stonework that was extremely level and square.

The result was both stunning and functional. A benefit of solid shutters is that they offer near blackout when closed and add insulation without the need for secondary glazing. Due to the panel size and depth of the reveal, the panels can be folded open in the day and remain within the aperture, without sticking out into the room.
