Shutters suit every window type and can be designed to complement any existing furnishings or styling as our clients desire. Sometimes they are a statement, sometimes they’re purely functional and fuss-free. As we mention on many occasions, shutters are the most flexible of all the window dressing options, and they always look amazing too.
We were called to a large, six-bed property in Haywards Heath recently, to address the window dressing for the new owners.
With a large number of wooden casement windows in the property, the first discussion revolved around the design and function required for the shutters. In this case, the windows were all relatively straight forward and our customer expressed a desire to be able to fold the panels out of the window during the day.
With no privacy issues, we settled on a full height, narrow panel design with a 63mm louvre, to mirror the glazing bars in the window and reduce the protrusion of the panels into the room when open. Each window had two, four or six panels across, dependent on the width, that then folded into the window reveal.
To compliment the décor, a standard Pure White finish was chosen with matching hinges. This would ensure that the shutters would blend into the neutral paint finish of the room and will be easy to match when the woodwork is re-painted in the future.
The effect of these shutters is truly stunning and the narrow panels provide a striking look when closed across the window, yet can be adjusted to allow light to flood through the louvres when required.
During the discussions, we were asked about the feasibility of shuttering the large L-shaped bi-fold doors in the kitchen. Whilst technically possible, these doors were better suited to a blind solution due to the configuration of the doors and the underfloor heating. The lack of space for the panels to fold back was also a cause for concern so for now that idea has been parked. We are always honest and would forego work like we did here if we believe it is the best course of action for the customer.
Shutters for twenty windows is a substantial number to install in one day. This equated to 62 shutter boxes to unpack! In order to keep disruption to a minimum for the client, with a three person team, we achieved this comfortably. As always, we took all our cardboard and packaging away and tried our upmost to leave the property as clean and tidy as when we arrived.
