These are some of the Frequently Asked Questions we receive about shutters. Please also refer to our HOW TO guides for information on how to measure, prepare for install etc.
What are interior plantation shutters?
The shutters supplied by The Window Shutter Company are called ‘Interior Plantation’ or ‘Colonial Shutters’. These are louvred panels which are fixed internally over windows and doors. Plantation Shutters originated in America and the West Indies and date back to before the American Civil War.
Are your shutters custom-made or supplied ‘off the shelf’?
All window or door recesses are different and require careful measuring. Our shutters are custom-made to order and hence why there is a 8-10 week lead time.
Do you have a showroom?
We don’t currently have a showroom but always bring sample panels of our different products to the home design visit.
What sets your shutters apart from those of your competitors?
We provide the best shutters on the market and we endeavour to support them with our expertise and the highest levels of customer care possible. We also have one of the most experienced and knowledgeable teams in the market who will ensure that your shutters are professionally fitted and finished.
Are window shutters child-friendly?
Yes. Shutters are perfect for children’s rooms and nurseries. Unlike blinds, there are no cords for a child to play with. Shutters also help to control the light, ensuring a good night’s sleep for all.
Can shutters offer complete ‘blackout’?
Our shutters do give excellent light closure but they do allow a very slight light seep through the closed louvres and around the frame. However, all of our shutters are fitted with light blocks to minimise this. For those that require complete darkness, a blind can be fitted behind the shutters for added light reduction. Do you supply solid shutters?
Yes, we can supply a Solid Raised shutter design. Solid shutters were originally used in Victorian and Edwardian houses. Installed in reveal boxes, they were used to secure the property when the owners returned to their main dwelling at the end of the season. Our modern take on the design is both functional and stylish.
Can plantation shutters be fitted externally?
Our shutter ranges are designed for internal use only.
I would like to book an appointment – do I have to pay?
All of our design consultations are free of charge and there is no pressure or obligation to buy. We will visit your home to measure and evaluate your windows and to discuss which product, colour and finish would be most suitable for your room, windows and décor.
Will shutters improve the security of my house?
Interior shutters can help with security as they make it difficult or sometimes impossible for people to see into your home and they can act as a deterrent to intruders as they are another barrier to entry.
Once I have decided on my shutter design, what happens next?
We request a 50% deposit at time of placing the order, with the balance due after installation. Please expect to receive and have your shutters professionally fitted approximately 8-10 weeks after placing your order.
Do your window shutters come with any guarantee?
All of our shutter ranges come with a 5 year manufacturer’s guarantee.
Do shutters increase privacy?
Yes they do. Louvred shutters across a window or door make it very difficult for people to see into your home. Additionally, louvred shutters still allow light in, whilst maintaining your level of privacy by adjusting the angle of the louvres.
Can I fit the shutters myself?
Yes you can, however, we would recommend against this. Our professional fitters are highly skilled and have many years experience. The fitting should be left to a professional for the best possible finish.
Will my shutters require maintenance of any kind?
What louvre size should I choose?
This choice depends on the size of the window and the levels of privacy required. Generally, the larger the louvre size, the more light is allowed in, but less privacy is offered.
The louvres on my shutters are not holding their position, do they need replacing?
This is quite common as the louvres are operated regularly and the panels settle after fitting. On the side of the panel is a hole with a screw – this is the ‘tension screw’. Simply tighten this gently with a screwdriver and the tension will be adjusted on the louvres.
Can I have shutters painted in any colour of my choice?
Yes you can. We offer several ranges with ‘custom colour’ option available and can match most popular paint brands or a sample provided by you. Our custom colour paint will be best endeavour or closest colour match but is usually within a shade. Please click here for more info.
Can I get my shutters any quicker?
We do offer an air freight option but there is an additional cost involved. This will usually speed the delivery to approximately 4-5 weeks.
Will shutters make my room dark?
We can help you design your shutters to suit your needs. Light colour paints and larger louvres will help to reflect light into your home. Darker shades or stains and smaller louvres won’t bring in as much light.
